If anything characterizes the topography of this region, it is the unexpected diversity of landscapes (one of the most diverse in Europe!). High mountains that plunge into the sea, deep green valleys, crossed by fast-flowing rivers, and rocky shores interspersed with fine sandy beaches.

An enormous variety, full of contrasts. All these fantastic, varying landscapes melt together in an unparalleled succession of shapes and colours.

Cantabria has more than 200 kilometers of coastline where steep cliffs alternate with spacious bays, and more than 100 pristine sandy beaches. The backdrop to these beaches is exceptional. Sheer cliffs stand tall and proud, against green meadows and rolling hills.

In the distance you see mountains rising, with snow-capped peaks and hills for skiing. From a geological viewpoint, these peaks are world famous for their canyons and glacial forms – with the highest peaks reaching more than 2600m in the air.

Dominated by countless shades of green that colour the forests and meadows, and rolling hills which alternate with high mountains.

You see spectacular natural formations such as a narrow, limestone gorge carved out by a river, that reaches a length of 20 kilometers with 600 metre high walls. 

To enjoy breathtaking views of this region, you can travel by cable car and witness the splendour from 750m in the air.

Underground galleries run beneath the surface in Cantabria, part of one of the most important rock art heritages in the world, including a world famous prehistoric Paleolithic rock art cave.

The caves are famous for their uniqueness of speleothems, especially the abundance of delicate formations that defy gravity and take on whimsical shapes, lavishly decorating the walls and ceilings.

The landscape of Cantabria is complemented by seven natural parks and charming townships that hug the coastline, along the foot of the mountains. The natural isolation of valleys have preserved a number of these villages, each one more fascinating than the last.

There are villages that enjoy an enviable peace, broken only by the murmur of rivers or of the visitors who come to try the traditional dishes of the area. Almost thirty centuries comprise the history of Cantabria.
